The River Vale Volunteer Fire Department is actively seeking members of our community to join our ranks! Joining the RVFD is a unique and rewarding experience as you will be on the front line in the effort to protect and serve your community. Joining the RVFD allows you to expand your social network, improve upon your leadership and teamwork skills and takes you places you've never been before.

Although this is a Volunteer organization, there are some ways to earn money. Upon joining, you are automatically enrolled in the Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP); this is similar to a retirement plan. We also provide an annual clothing allowance that has the opportunity to increase the more you participate. You can also enjoy free golf at the River Vale Country Club.

If you are brand new to the fire service, it is mandatory for you to attend Firefighter 1 at the Bergen County Fire Academy. Here, you will learn how to become a firefighter. You will learn how to attack fire, ventilate buildings and perform rescues. Upon graduation, you will continue to train with the department during our monthly drills. There are also many classes you can take once you complete Firefighter 1 such as Firefighter 2, Fire Officer, Fire Ground Officer Development, Rescue Technician and much more.

Junior Firefighter Program

For young men and women between the ages of 14-17 years old, you could join our ranks as a Junior Firefighter. Our Junior Firefighters actively training with our Officers and Regular Members and can respond to fire calls. Juniors are trained to do many essential tasks such as hitting a fire hydrant, throwing ground ladders, swapping out SCBA cylinders and running tools. Once a Junior turns 16, they are eligible to attend Firefighter 1. We strongly believe that academics come first; our Junior firefighters are not permitted to skip or leave school for fire calls or training exercises.
