River Vale Fire Prevention Bureau

The objective of the River Vale Fire Prevention Bureau is to make sure all commercial buildings are in compliance with the Uniform Fire Code, State of New Jersey and the International Fire Code.
The River Vale Fire Prevention team consists of the Fire Inspectors who report to the Fire Marshal. The River Vale Fire Prevention team has undergone educational and certification processes mandated by the State of New Jersey. The Inspectors will inspect schools, businesses, and places of assemblies in River Vale for New Jersey Code compliance.
The River Vale Fire Prevention Bureau also inspects all homes, condo’s and townhouses for sale or rent/lease to ensure smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers are installed as required by the Uniform Fire Code before the closing or new occupancy.
The River Vale Fire Prevention Bureau also educates the public about fire safety throughout the year.

HOME SAFETY PROGRAM
SMOKE ALARMS
- Have a working smoke detector on every level of your home
- Test smoke detectors monthly
- NEVER disable or remove batteries
- Have a working Carbon Monoxide detector 10 Feet from every sleeping quarters
ESCAPE PLANNING
- Develop a fire escape plan with your family members and practice it often
- Know two ways out of every room in your home
- Make sure windows and doors operate properly
- In the event of a fire, feel closed doors before opening, if hot, use another exit
- Identify a meeting place outside the home…NEVER Re-Enter a burning building
THE EASIEST FIRE TO PUT OUT IS THE ONE YOU PREVENT
- Have your furnace and chimney inspected on a annual basis
- Keep combustibles at least 3 feet from any heat source (fireplaces, hot water heater, space heaters, furnace)
- Never overload electrical outlets
- Check that all smoking materials are extinguished
- Never allow anyone to smoke in bed
